At twenty to twelve he walks down the hall and tries the front door, and it is locked, and he knew it was locked, because he locked it himself at nine.
He stands there anyway with his hand on the handle. The hall light is on, the way it has been on every night since the spring. The keys are in the blue dish on the shelf where the keys always are. His coat is still on the hook because he never quite finished coming home. In the kitchen the fridge starts up, thinks better of it, and goes quiet.
He goes back to bed. Twenty minutes later he gets up and checks it again.
He is not checking the lock. The lock has never once been open. What he is checking is a sentence that moved into the house about a year ago and has never offered to leave, and the sentence goes like this: there is nothing between me and the next bad thing.
He has never said it out loud. You have not either, because said out loud it sounds like superstition, and you are not a superstitious person. You are simply a person who has learned that things can be taken. So you check a door you already locked, and you look at your phone before you look at the clock, and when somebody starts a sentence with we need to talk, your whole body knows the ending before they reach it. It is not a burglar you are braced for. Everything good you have feels borrowed, and underneath that there is a quiet, grinding suspicion that when the knock finally comes it will be for you, and that you will have had it coming.

The night a whole nation stood in their doorways
Let me say plainly what I think rests on your shoulders, because I would rather be accurate with you than encouraging.
This anxiety is not about nothing. The checking is exactly what a person does when they believe the case against them is still open. Somewhere behind it there is an accusation, and it does not always have words, and when it does they are old ones. You know what you did. You alone, the exception. This will find you. It is not loud. It is patient, which is worse, and it has learned to arrive at the hour when there is nobody awake to disagree with it. That is a heavy thing to carry alone through your own hallway, and it has been carried a long time.
So here is the oldest answer there is, and it was given to a whole nation on their last night in a country that had used them up.
They were not told to fight. They were not told to run yet. They were told to mark the doorway of the house.
And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you.Exodus 12:13
You have an answer older than the accusation that waits in this hallway. Scripture puts the seeing in God's hands, and the Holy Spirit carries that settled word into a body tired from keeping watch.
Read who is doing the seeing.
It does not say when you see the blood. It does not say when certainty arrives, or when your hand is steady, or when the theology feels understood well enough for sleep. It says when I see. The whole weight of that night rested on His eyes, not on the confidence of the people inside. There were surely families in those houses who lay awake all night with their hearts going like birds, and the covering over them was exactly as good as the covering over the calmest family on the street. It was never their grip on it that made it hold.
And notice what it was called: a token. A sign. A mark that said whose house this was. It was not paint with power in it. It was not a technique, and there was no way to perform it more correctly than your neighbor. It was a covering that God Himself had appointed, and He was the one who read it.
Now, I am not going to claim that nothing hard is coming. Nobody honest can make that claim, and if a message ever promises it, close the message. That night in Egypt was one night and one judgement, and it was never handed down as a warranty over your week. When God speaks about the waters, He does not say around, He says through, and the reason it is survivable is the sentence He puts in front of it: I will be with thee. The protection offered here is His presence, not an outcome.
That Passover night does not create a ritual for this hallway or promise physical safety for this house. It shows God appointing and recognizing the sign in that covenant moment. The New Testament then directs assurance to Christ Himself: His sacrifice and intercession answer accusation, while ordinary locks and wise care keep their ordinary work.
Which brings it to your hallway, tonight, personally.
Paul writes that Christ our passover is sacrificed for us. Not was, once, for other people, in a story. For us. The letter to the Hebrews says something even more startling: we have come to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. Abel's blood cried out from the ground for an accounting. This one speaks, and it speaks better things, which means the accusation in your house at midnight is not the only voice in the room and never was. It is simply the voice heard most often.
And Paul goes further. The writing that stood against you was blotted out, taken out of the way, nailed to His cross. Not filed. Not suspended pending review. Blotted out, and then removed from the room, so that there is nothing left on the table for anyone to read from.
That is why nothing can accuse you tonight without immediately running into an answer. Not your answer. His.
You have been standing in a corridor outside a courtroom, waiting all year for your name to be called, in a case that was closed before you got here. Scripture says God justifies, and the Holy Spirit brings that ruling into this corridor now.
That is the whole of it. Not new strength. Not finally believing hard enough for the covering to activate, because that is not what covering is and it never was. The case is closed. The writing that stood against you is not in the building. What has been called vigilance is a verdict repeatedly read, and every reading finds the same words because the page itself was blotted out.
And hear this before you go any further: the bracing was never a failure of faith. It is what any reasonable person does when nobody has ever told them the matter was settled. Someone should have told you years ago, at the kitchen table, with tea going cold, and if nobody did then that is our failure and not yours. So I am telling you now, at twenty to twelve, in the hallway.
Hard things may still come to your door. That is honest and I will not soften it. What cannot come is a charge with no answer, because the answer was given publicly, at the cross, before these locks ever needed checking.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing in that doorway with your hand flat on the frame. In Christ, the standing to speak has been given to you: the frame is ordinary wood, the lock handles the door, and His finished work answers accusation. Feeling settled is not required before you speak what Scripture has already made clear. The outcome is His, and this doorway makes no promise about the rest of the night.
- Accusation at my door, you have been answered, and I say so in the name of Jesus. Scripture says the blood of sprinkling speaks better things, and the Holy Spirit keeps that older, kinder voice clear over this house.
- Bracing that walks this hallway at midnight, you are off watch, and the keeping of this house belongs to the One who does not slumber. Scripture names God my Keeper, and the Holy Spirit steadies me while His seeing remains sure.
- God, You closed this case before I got here, and You answered what was accusing me before I reached this hallway. Scripture says You justify, so I welcome the Holy Spirit, keep my hand flat on the frame, and leave the covered house with You.
