Witness For OthersJohn 9:25

Half a Story and a Bag of Concrete

This message is for to stand as the evidence for a person who has no account of their own

The second bag goes into the barrow, the water goes on top of it, and for about a minute neither of them says a word, because mixing is loud and because they have used up the easy part of the conversation.

They are setting a gate post at the end of a gravel drive on a Saturday in October, and it has taken most of the morning. It is his sister's husband on the other end of the shovel. A good man. Fixes whatever breaks, drives four hours at midnight if you call him, has never in his life asked anybody for anything. And somewhere in that second bag, over the noise, he says it the way another man would report the weather. He has never seen God do anything. Not once, in fifty one years.

He is not saying it to start an argument. That is the part that lands hardest. There is no edge on it at all, no old wound underneath it that a good answer would reach. He says it, then he taps the post with the back of the shovel to see whether it is sitting true, and as far as he is concerned the subject is closed.

And you have an account. You have had one since you were twenty two. It is real, it is yours, and you have never once managed to hand it over in a way that sounded like anything at all. You got three sentences in that morning. You heard your own voice go thin somewhere in the second one. Then you said "anyway", and you reached for the level, and you have been hearing that "anyway" ever since.

Half a Story and a Bag of Concrete

The witness is the one nobody can replace

Let me name what you are actually carrying, because it is heavier than the post was and you have been carrying it for years without ever setting it down.

You have one honest account to carry, and you were never assigned the weight of another person's believing. John 9 limits the witness to what he knows, and the Holy Spirit returns the verdict to hands larger than yours.

You have made yourself responsible for his believing.

Nobody asked you to. It arrived quietly, the way most of these loads do, and now every conversation with him has a scoreboard running underneath it. You rehearse in the car. You come away from a good day at his table with a small gray weight, because once again it did not come up, or it came up and you fumbled it. And under all of it sits the verdict you have already passed on yourself: that if you were a better believer, or a better talker, your brother in law would have seen something by now. Scripture assigns no such verdict, and the Holy Spirit does not grade faithful witness by another person's response.

That load is real and it is crushing you, and it was never rated for you. It was never rated for anyone. Look at what Scripture actually asks of a person who has seen something.

He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.John 9:25

That is a man in the middle of a formal interrogation. They have questioned him once, sent for his parents, and called him back for a second round. They have the training, the credentials and the last word. He cannot explain the mechanism, he cannot answer their theology, and he says so plainly.

What he has is one sentence about what happened to his own eyes.

And notice how the hearing ends. He does not win it. They throw him out. By every measure a man could apply to himself, the witness failed: he lost the room, he lost his standing, he was put outside on his own. Then Jesus goes and finds him out there, which is the detail that ought to reorganize everything you have believed about your Saturday morning.

You are not a failed witness when the room does not agree. Scripture records Jesus finding the man outside, and the Holy Spirit keeps rejection from becoming a verdict on the one who spoke honestly.

Because the man was never the prosecution. He was the witness. Those are different offices, and confusing them is why you have been exhausted for years.

You are the witness, not the prosecutor, and that distinction is yours now. Scripture keeps witness distinct from judgment, and the Holy Spirit returns each office to its rightful bearer.

A prosecutor has to build a case, anticipate the objections, close well, and secure a verdict. If he loses, the loss is his. A witness has one job, and it is the smallest job in the room. He says what he saw. He is not asked to be persuasive. He is not asked to be eloquent. He is not asked to deliver the verdict, and he could not deliver it if he tried, because that seat belongs to somebody else entirely.

And here is the thing about that small job. In any court on earth, every other person can be replaced. Another lawyer can be briefed. The one seat nobody can substitute for is the seat of the person who was actually there. You are not a weak advocate for God. You are the only man in your family who was in the room when it happened.

Your three thin sentences remain evidence because you were there. Scripture honors the plain account of the one who saw, and the Holy Spirit keeps that account from becoming an argument you must win.

Scripture says they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. Read the order of that. The blood is the ground, already laid, already holding, long before anyone opens his mouth. The word of the testimony is what gets laid on ground that was poured and cured and load rated by Christ Himself. Your three thin sentences were never holding the weight. The blood was. That is why the account did not fail when your voice did.

He is the same God today that He was when you were twenty two. He has not retired, He has not gone quiet, and the work He did in you did not have a shelf life. And it is yours. Not borrowed, not on loan until you tell it well enough to keep. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and what you saw, you saw.

You have an account resting on Christ rather than on the steadiness of your voice. Scripture establishes Him as the ground beneath it, and the Holy Spirit keeps its truth from expiring with time.

The breakthrough

Set the load down. Right now, in this room, before you have any idea how the rest of it goes.

Scripture leaves the outcome with God, and the Holy Spirit releases your hands before the next chapter is known.

You have been holding two things at once and only one of them was ever yours. Yours is the account. His is his own road, and it runs between him and God, and there is no version of this where you walk it for him. You cannot argue a man into sight. Nobody ever has. The hearing in John 9 was won on points by the people who ended up blind, which tells you exactly what winning is worth here.

Scripture leaves his road between him and God, and the Holy Spirit releases your chest from carrying it.

So hand the case back to the Judge. Not with a sigh, and not as a defeat. Hand it back because it was filed in the wrong court and has been sitting on your chest for years for nothing.

And then hear what is left, because what is left is not small. You are the evidence. Not the argument, the evidence. Your account was true before he heard it, it stayed true while you fumbled it, and it is true now, this afternoon, whether or not it is ever spoken again in that man's kitchen. What God did for you was not a story you have to keep proving. It was a thing He did.

Scripture gives testimony its honest place, and the Holy Spirit keeps evidence from becoming pressure.

There is no script here. Nothing to memorize, nothing to work into a conversation on a drive. Just a man who was there, still standing where his brother in law can see him, holding a door open and leaving the latch on the other side alone.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud over the page with his name on it. In Christ, your account is yours to tell, his road is his to walk, and the Holy Spirit keeps both from being confused. The name is not a target and the page is not a technique; the outcome is His, and this is one place to set down the weight you were never assigned.

  1. Silence over my own account, get out of my mouth, in the name of Jesus. Scripture says they overcame by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and the Holy Spirit keeps what He did for me true whether it comes out steady or thin.
  2. Shame from that Saturday, you are answered and you are not staying in this house. Scripture shows Jesus finding the man outside, and the Holy Spirit keeps my one honest sentence enough for witness.
  3. God, You are the Shepherd who goes out after the one, and You are better at this than I am. Scripture leaves his heart with You, so I welcome the Holy Spirit, hold this door open, and ask nothing of him in the name of Jesus.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
