At ten to eight she is early again, which is how she has always managed being on time, and she sits in the car park with the engine off and the handbrake up and eight minutes to spend.
The wipers are still beaded from the roundabout. There is a paper bag with two pastries in it on the passenger seat, one for her and one for the woman on the desk who has been kind to her for six years. The engine ticks as it cools. Two rows over, a van door slams and somebody laughs at something. And in the space where the engine noise used to be, the sentence arrives, in her own voice, word for word, the way it has arrived on and off since she was twenty three.
She turns the radio back on. Not for the news. For the noise.
You know that trick. You have a version of it and you have had it for years: the podcast at the sink, the television left on in an empty room, the phone picked up at four in the morning not to read anything but to have something to look at. It is not a character flaw. It is what a person does when quiet has stopped being restful, because quiet is when the sentence gets the floor.

Repetition is not evidence
Let me say the part nobody says to you, because I think you have been carrying it on your own. Revelation names the voice as the accuser, and the Holy Spirit keeps that written identification clear when familiarity tries to pass itself off as authority.
It is not the sentence that exhausts you. It is the arithmetic. Twenty years, and you can still be stopped in a car park by a handful of words. You have prayed about it. You have read about it. You have had a good stretch of months where you genuinely thought it had gone, and then a quiet morning arrives and it is back in the room with its shoes on.
And underneath the tiredness there is a second thing, and this is the one that does the real damage. A quiet suspicion has grown up in you that a thing which has lasted this long must have lasted because it is true. That if it were only noise, surely it would have worn out by now.
Hear this plainly, because everything else in this message turns on it. A sentence that has run in your head for twenty years has proved exactly one thing: that it has run for twenty years. Endurance is a property of the recording, not of the truth. A thousand times is not evidence. It is one time, a thousand times.
You possess a verdict that repetition cannot revise. Revelation gives the recurring voice its proper name, and the Holy Spirit keeps one old sentence from becoming evidence merely because it learned to echo.
There is a scene in the prophets I want to put in front of you, and I want you to notice who does the talking.
A man is standing in a court. He is the high priest, and his garments are filthy, and nobody in the scene pretends otherwise. There is a voice standing at his right hand whose whole occupation is the accusing, and there is nothing in the text to suggest the charges have been made up.
And the man never speaks. Not one word in his own defense. The answer comes over his head, from the throne: the accuser is rebuked, the filthy garments are taken off him, and clean ones are put on him with the word that his guilt has been caused to pass from him. He does not argue his way out of that court. He is dressed his way out of it.
You are clothed by God's answer now; you are not standing in the old garment waiting to become your own defense. Zechariah records the Lord rebuking the accuser, and the Holy Spirit makes that change of raiment present where shame still points at the stain.
That is the oldest shape of this in the whole Bible, and the newest one says it in a single line.
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony.Revelation 12:11
Notice what is not in that sentence. Not by the strength of their case. Not by the cleanliness of their record. Not by finally out arguing the voice at half past three in the morning. By the blood of the Lamb, which is legal ground and not a feeling, and by the word of their testimony, which is simply what they said out loud about what that blood had done.
Two things stand between you and the quiet you want, and neither of them is a shortage of effort on your part.
The first is a suspicion that all of this belongs to the past. A courtroom in an old book, a scene from somebody else's century. But the question in Romans is asked in the present tense and it is asked the way a man asks a question in a room where he already knows that nobody can stand up. Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. That is not a wistful line. That is a court going quiet.
The second is heavier, because it is personal. Everyone else, you think, but not me. Other people have files that can be closed. Mine has the thing in it that I have never said out loud to anybody.
Here is the answer to that, and it is not comfort, it is jurisdiction. Christ did not die for a general category of people and leave the difficult files to be dealt with some other way. There is no clause in the blood that reads except for that one. A covering that leaves out the worst thing is not a covering at all, it is a sheet with a hole cut in it exactly where the rain comes in, and He did not go to a cross to hand you that.
You are covered at the very place fear calls the exception. Romans asks who can lay a charge against those God justifies, and the Holy Spirit seals that written answer over the part of your story you were certain had been left in the rain.
You have been appealing a case that was closed at the top. The written word in Romans records God as the One who justifies, and the Holy Spirit ends the exhausting fiction that you must keep filing your own appeal.
That is the whole of it, and it is why the effort has never worked. Everything you have tried has been an appeal. Better behavior offered as evidence. A good year offered as character reference. Arguing with the voice at half past three as though you were counsel for the defense. All of it assumes the case is open and that you are the one who has to win it.
The case is not open. It was answered in public, at a cross, and the ground of the answer is not your record. The voice can still talk. Something with no standing can still make a great deal of noise, and noise is not jurisdiction. What it cannot do is bring a charge, because the charge it wants to bring has already been answered and the court has moved on.
So this morning is not a fight you have to win. It is a verdict you get to stand on. The distance between those two is the distance between exhaustion and rest, and you have been living on the wrong side of it for a long time, not because you did not try and not because you did not believe hard enough. Nobody had handed you the ground to stand on. That is our job, not yours, and it is being handed to you now. The written Word shows Zechariah's clean garment already on you and Romans closing the charge, while the Holy Spirit keeps the old arithmetic from dressing you again.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, wherever you are sitting, with your hand where you put it. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to answer a voice in your own head has been given to you, and it was never something you had to earn a clean enough year to deserve. The hinge of Matthew 17:20 is a verb. The faith Jesus asks for weighs one seed, and what that faith does is say, in the second person, to the thing itself. So say it to the sentence that started running when you were too young to know how to answer it. That sentence is the mountain, not you, and it is answered with a mouth and not with a mood. What tomorrow morning sounds like in your house is His to decide, and however He answers, the verdict you are standing on this morning was settled long before you woke up. The Holy Spirit keeps this Scriptural word grounded.
- Accusation that has run in me since I was young, you have no standing here, and in the name of Jesus I dismiss you from the room. The Word of God says that they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, so what heaven has already answered, I do not have to answer again.
- Fear that twenty years of repetition has turned this accusation into evidence, leave in the name of Jesus; duration has not given you standing. The Word of God asks who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect, and the Holy Spirit makes that answer living: God justifies me, the old arithmetic is broken, and the clean garment remains mine.
- Lord Jesus, You are my covering and You are my answer, and I am covered now, this morning, in this room. Your written Word closes the court, Your Holy Spirit keeps the clean garment on me, and one sentence repeated a thousand times cannot dress me again.
